What is this fan?
This is a type of mechanical fan used in commercial and industrial settings. Unlike residential ceiling fans that are typically 36 to 52 inches in diameter, these fans have very large diameters that start at 12 feet and go up to 24 feet. These fans move very slowly unlike standard fans which operate at high speed. With large diameters and low rotating speed, they can move large amounts of air, which is why they are named "high volume, low speed" (HVLS) fans.
HVLS fans are widely applied in livestock barns, warehouses, distribution centers, shopping malls, skating rinks, health clubs, and more. Due to the rising costs of energy, HVLS fans are often used to supplement HVAC systems as they provide a stronger cooling effect while helping to maintain a constant temperature and humidity.
How does it work?
The unique airfoil blades produce a massive, cylindrical column of air that flows down to the floor and outward in all directions. This horizontal floor jet pushes air a greater distance before it begins to move vertically and is drawn back through the fan. The greater the down flow, the greater the air circulation will be.
IN SUMMER: HVLS fans work on the principle that a breeze moving across your skin on a very hot day feels good. The cool moving air breaks up the moisture-saturated boundary layer (also known as sweat) surrounding the body and accelerates evaporation to produce a cooling effect.
IN WINTER: In a closed space, heated air always gathers in the higher spaces. That is why in large commercial spaces, even if the air conditioner is set to its highest point, people on the ground still feel cold. HVLS fans can eliminate the separation of the cold and hot air layers, allowing the heated air to circulate efficiently.
